 We at the Puerto Rico Hotel & Tourism Association are committed to conserving nature… Our love for our beaches, mountains, wildlife and natural heritage drives our desire to share and promote these true blessings with the world. We believe that our social interactions through travel and tourism are more meaningful when we protect and conserve a healthy environment and actively promote a responsible interaction with our natural assets. Our Conservation Committee continuously strives to translate these principles into action. Through our partnerships with EPA’s Green Hotels program and organizations such as Blue Flag, the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism (CAST) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), we provide our members with relevant and accurate information on industry standards for sustainability. Our Green Hotels Program, established since 1995, was the first of its kind in the island and continues to provide valuable guidance to hotels in all aspects of “greening” their operations, through education, consultations, impact assessments and activities. For 15 years, the PRHTA’s Conservation Committee has provided leadership and practical solutions to our member hotels and suppliers alike, seeking funding for projects and promoting knowledge exchange with government agencies and other organizations. It has conducted hundreds of individual assessments and celebrated the efforts and achievements, whether big or small, of our Green Hotels Program participants in pollution prevention, environmental impacts administration and corporate social responsibility. All the work is done on a voluntary basis by committed professionals, certified in industry and sustainability standards, with the collaboration of private industry and academia.
